SPOTLIGHT

Teacher Feature

SA teachers, Ms. Beth White and Mr. Reginald O’Neill, co-teach a course new to Drew called Innovation and Design in the Community. This isn’t your standard high school course either. Ms. White and Mr. O’Neill created this course after the last school year, when their individual classes collaborated on a project to create a remote controlled lawn mower for a disabled member of the East Lake community. The collaboration worked so well that the two requested that their classes be combined this school year to create a course co-taught by both teachers simultaneously.  Mr. O’Neill and Ms. White consider themselves facilitators as they help to guide the students through the worlds of business, design, and entrepreneurship. Most recently, the students took part in the Atlanta Maker Faire where they sold scribble bots and 3D printer created rings; both very popular items at the festival. You will have your opportunity the purchase both items at the Fall Festival on October 25th.

Spotlight On A PTA Volunteer

Ruth Jennings

Ruth Jennings is our featured PTA volunteer for the month of October. Ruth became a part of the Drew community when her granddaughter enrolled in  the Elementary Academy last year. Ruth, who is retired from the workforce, also serves as a surrogate grandparent to students across all of our campuses. Ruth currently serves as a 5th grade Room Parent, the PTA Volunteer Liaison, and the Fall Festival Committee Captain. Ruth always brings forth a positive attitude and makes herself available whenever the PTA or the larger school community has a need. Ruth is working hard to ensure that all of Drew’s students have a positive learning experience. As a PTA volunteer, she encourages better communication, parental participation, and community involvement. The PTA is so appreciative of the work that Ruth is doing.  If you see her on one of the campuses, please stop and thank her!

Our 4th Annual Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, October 25th from 12-4pm. This year our Fall Festival will be held on both campuses, as we have some exciting things planned for the entire Drew community. The Fall Festival Committee meets every Friday at 8am in the JA/SA Conference Room. It’s not too late to get involved. The Committee is looking for vendors, Eagle Sound Stage participants, volunteers and donations. Please see the PTA website for more information at www.drewcharterschoolpta.com. This event is one of our biggest events of the year and we need your support. Let’s make this our best Fall Festival yet!

PTA Meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Theater/Peforming Arts Center of the Junior/Senior Academy campus. Become a member and let your voice be heard!

(Meetings will be held in the auditorium of the Upper Academy)

Your PTA has had another busy month! There are so many exciting things going on throughout all of our campuses. We held awesome parent workshops at both of our campuses, we had a great turnout for our Donuts for Dads event, we hosted another Goal Getter program for our EA students, and we held a successful Spirit Night at Edgewood Five Guys—a big thank you to Edgewood Fives Guys, owned by Drew Parents! Most notably, we completed a Spirit Gear Sale.  The Fundraising Committee would like to thank Drew Parents for really stepping up and showing their school spirit. The Committee recognizes that the success of this event shows how much we have grown as a school. The success of this sale also reflects how proud we are of our children, as they excel academically at this beautiful school. We have a lot to be proud of and the best is yet to come!
