September News & Events

SPOTLIGHT

Teacher Feature

JA 8th Grade Physical Science teacher, Ms. Shameka Williams, is our featured teacher for the month of September. Ms. Williams has an exciting curriculum planned for her students this year. This

isn’t your average science class. Ms. Williams’ class is designed to ignite the imagination and instill a love of science. Along with our partners at Georgia Tech, Ms. Williams plans to guide her students

on a forensics journey filled with clues and scientific evidence as they work to solve a case. Students will work with biological and chemical concepts, perform a crime scene investigation and work on a LEED project.

Monica Reese

Monica Reese is our featured PTA volunteer for the

month of September. Monica, the parent of an

Elementary Academy student, has been an active

Drew parent since the moment she joined our

community a few years ago. Monica has helped in

our membership drive, the Teacher Appreciation

Committee, and has been a Room Parent. When the PTA has a need, we can always count on Monica.

Monica, your PTA appreciates your commitment

and support!

Join the school community in the Lower Academy Media Center for refreshments and dialogue.

PTA Meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Theater/Peforming Arts Center of the Junior/Senior Academy campus. Become a member and let your voice be heard!

We are just one month into a new school year and your PTA has already been on the move! We kicked off the year with a luncheon honoring over 200 Drew teachers and staff members. Gourmet Express catered the luncheon, as a gift to the PTA. Gourmet Express is owned by Drew parent Gary Matthews—thank you, Gary!!

We saved Drew parents money and time by using a Target program to purchase 120 sets of school supplies—a huge thank you to Edgewood Target! We’ve recruited over 300 PTA members and had close to 300 members at our first PTA meeting.

We had our largest Walk-to-School day yet, and are planning the next one for October 8th! The PTA also hosted the first Goal Getters program, where Drew celebrated the accomplishments of 136 students. We are well on our way to a successful school year! It’s not too late to get involved!

Soap Box Derby

The PTA sponsored the Drew Soap Box Derby in the 7th Annual Dunwoody Soap Box Derby Race on

Saturday, June 7th. It was an enjoyable experience

for all who participated. This year the race had more

than 40 cars and drivers in different divisions. The

Drew Soap Box car raced in the Super Stock division, competing against 16 cars in that division. Our driver, Christian Fisher, who is a rising 6th grader at Drew, placed 6th in the Super Stock division. We look forward to continuing this Drew Soap Box Derby racing tradition in the future!

Dine at Edgewood Five Guys from 5-8pm. Mention Drew and we will receive 10% of sales!

Your PTA in Action

Mr. Kelvin Buckley

Mr. Buckley is a 4th grade teacher at Drew. While this is his 2nd year teaching at Drew, he has been a teacher for 8 years. His areas of focus have been Math, Science, and Reading. Mr. Buckley is a track enthusiast, as he ran track and field at Southern University Baton Rouge. He is excited to be starting the track program at our Senior Academy. While Mr. Buckley thinks that academics are important for children, he thinks that character development is equally important to further equip them with life-long skills. With the PTA, Mr. Buckley wants to help provide a teacher's perspective in regards to the happenings around Drew while continuing to build a positive, reflective, and transparent relationship between the parent body and faculty/staff body

at the school. In his spare time, Mr. Buckley plays recreational football and basketball, cooks, spends time outdoors, and cares for his 12-year-old son. Welcome aboard, Mr. Buckley!
